Osteopathy is not covered by OHIP but it is included in many, but not all, extended healthcare benefit packages. Unfortunately, coverage is complicated. This is in part because osteopathy is not yet a regulated health profession in Ontario, which gives insurance companies the right to choose which colleges and associations they wish to cover. So even if your benefits through your employer include coverage for osteopathy, it is important to check that they cover the college and/or association your manual osteopath belongs to. Lisa belongs to 5 colleges/associations, both provincial and national, to try to include all insurance companies and have broad coverage. Even still, coverage with insurance companies is ever changing! Lisa belongs to:
College of Registered Manual Osteopaths ~ CRMO
College of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners of Ontario ~ COMPO
National Canadian Association of Alternative Medicine ~ ACMA
College of Canadian Osteopaths ~ CCO
Federation des Médecines Alternatives ~ FMA
Lisa is also a Registered Kinesiologist with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario. Some insurance plans now cover kinesiology.
As of 2022, the list of known insurers include:
Green Shield - direct billing is available
Sun Life
Desjardins
Manulife
Medavie Blue Cross - direct billing is available
Claims Secure
Manion
Equitable Life - direct billing is available
Empire Life
Nexgenrx - direct billing is available
Eclipse Financial
Sirius Benefits
Chamber of Commerce
Johnson Group
The College of Registered Manual Osteopaths continues to lobby to insurance companies, so this list is ever changing. It is always best to make a quick call to your insurance company to check if they will reimburse for treatment from the specific college/ association.
